The Gospel of Jesus Christ

The basic gospel message is that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, as stated in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (NIV):

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

More details of the Gospel message are explained in a portion of our Statement of Faith.

A. Origin of Humanity and Disobedience

Humanity was created in the image and likeness of God with the freedom of choice. Being in God’s image pertains to such areas as Mental, Moral, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual. The crucial moral choice God provided the first human beings, Adam and Eve, involved whom they would consider to be god of their lives, the one holy God or themselves. Their disobedience in the Garden of Eden with respect to eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil indicated that they wanted to be their own god. This disobedience or sin caused them to die spiritually and to begin to die physically. As a result, they became very troubled in the holy presence of God. They had lost fellowship with their Creator. In addition, all of their descendants are born with a sinful nature. Those human beings who remain separated from fellowship with God will be separated from Him and true life eternally. (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:17; 3:2-8; Romans 3:23; 5:12-19)

B. Salvation Provided

Each Being of the Godhead was involved in the salvation and restoration process provided for humanity. The first Being of the trinity, God the Father, provided the means for restoration of fellowship and freedom from the bondage of sin by sending the second Being of the trinity, Jesus Christ, who took on human form, lived a sinless life, and willingly died on the cross as the only qualified sacrifice to take on the consequence of sin on behalf of sinful humanity. He offered Himself through the Holy Spirit, the third Being of the trinity, as the blood sacrifice, and both the Father and Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead. (Isaiah 53:4 6; Acts 2:24, 32; 13:30; Romans 6:4; 8:11; 1 Corinthians 4:14; 6:14; 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:20; Philippians 2:6 8; Hebrews 4:15; 9:14, 28; 12:2; 13:20; 1 Peter 1:21; 2:22 25; 3:18; 1 John 3:5)

C. Salvation Applied

God’s grace that brings salvation has appeared to everyone. Those who receive God’s provision by faith in Christ’s atoning work at the cross and apply this work to their lives for the forgiveness of sin are born-again spiritually, have restored fellowship with God, and are free from the bondage of sin, being renewed by the Holy Spirit and indwelt by the Godhead. They also have the blessed hope of eternal life in the presence of God. (John 3:3-8, 16; 14:17, 23; 15:4 5; Romans 6:23; 8:10 11; 10:8-13; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 2:22; 3:17; Colossians 1:27; Titus 2:11; Titus 3:4-7; 1 John 3:23-24; 4:12-13; Revelation 3:20)

D. The Christ Life

All those who are born again, having applied the salvation provided by the Godhead, are considered believers and have the power available from God to live a godly life and to grow into Christlikeness. They also are directed to seek empowerment through the filling of the Holy Spirit for effective service. (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; 2:4; 4:8, 31; 7:55; 9:17; 13:9, 52; Romans 6:1-14; 8:29; 1 Corinthians 15:49; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 4:19; Ephesians 4:22-24; Philippians 2:5; Titus 2:12; 2 Peter 1:3)
